Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week and want to share. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.
How to Treat 4 Types of Gunshot Wounds
While these aren’t the latest Tactical Combat Casualty Care protocols, this is better than average advice for the untrained person who wants to know how to treat a gunshot wound.
Most TCCC courses have discouraged the elevation and pressure point use to control bleeding. They are only marginally effective and may waste time. If you have a spurting arterial bleed or the bleed can’t be controlled by a pressure bandage, go immediately to tourniquet (or hemostatic agent if the TK isn’t available or it is a torso wound).
Additionally, his concern about spinal injury, while valid, is overstated. Only about 3% of combative bullet wounds have any spinal involvement at all. The majority of those do not make the spine unstable. If you do suspect there is a spinal injury, by all means, try to keep the patient from moving. But don’t let him bleed to death because you are afraid to roll him over to patch the exit wound.

The AK-47 And The M-4 In Security Contracting – A Comparison
A good comparison of features between the AK and AR-style weapons platforms. This one is written from a private security contracting angle, but the information if useful in all contexts. I generally prefer the AR-15 (free ammo from the PD helps with this choice), but the AK-47 has a lot of advantages. Whichever weapon you like best, it would be a very good idea to have at least two with at least 20 magazines for each. With the mass shooting that just occurred, I think these items will be first to be placed on the ban list. Even if only restricted, prices will certainly rise exponentially on these items. Stock up before it’s too late!
