Florida Deputies Had Difficulty Remembering Mass-Shooter Training
Speaking of active shooter situations, two new active killer incident debrief reports were released last week. The first describes the Broward County Parkland school shooting. You should take the time to read the linked article. A lot of police training is abysmally poor. A lot of officers are lazy and unmotivated. Some officers can’t run “due to being older.” Unfortunately, these may be the officers coming to rescue you in an active killer event or terrorist attack.
You all need to recognize that you are likely to be on your own for a while. No one is coming to save you. Plan accordingly.
If that fact isn’t frustrating enough, take a look at the second report. In the Pulse Nightclub shooting, medics were not told that SWAT was going to conduct an explosive breach. They thought the killer detonated the bomb. The closest fire station placed itself on lockdown and took 11 minutes to respond. Police and Fire command staff set up independent command posts and didn’t communicate with each other during the attack. The police and fire policies for responding to a terrorist attack had not been updated since 2001.
I wish I could tell you that this miserable performance is an isolated incident, but it is actually quite common throughout the USA. While there are a lot of heroic cops and firemen willing to put their lives on the line to save you, they are hampered by poor leadership, a lack of training, and a bunch of co-workers who really don’t give a shit about doing their jobs well.
Need more evidence that your first responders aren’t quite trained up as well as you would like? The Federal Air Marshals (one of the best trained law enforcement agencies in the country) had over 200 “Gun Mishaps” in the last 12 years.
