I got this drill from Karl Rehn at KRTraining.com. It is designed to replicate the conditions of the “average” gunfight being at a distance of three yards, firing three rounds, over the course of three seconds. The drill is 20 rounds and uses the same three second par time for each stage. Here it is:
At Three Yards
– Hands at sides, gun concealed. Step left, draw and fire 3 shots to body, 2 handed.
– From Ready, finger off trigger. Fire 2 head shots, 2 handed.
– Hands at sides, gun concealed. Step right, draw and fire 3 shots to body, 2 handed.
– Take one step forward (2 yards), put hand on gun. On signal, draw and shoot 2 shots to body strong hand only while backing up.
At Seven Yards
– Start with magazine in support hand, gun in dominant hand. On signal, insert mag, rack slide, fire 1 round to body, 2 handed.
– From Ready, finger off trigger. Fire one shot to head 2 handed.
– Face 90 degrees to left, hand on gun. (LH shooters face right.) On signal, turn, draw and shoot 3 shots to body two handed.
– Hand on gun, draw and shoot 2 shots to body strong hand only.
– Gun in non-dominant hand (only), aimed at target. Fire 3 shots to body
I shot this drill a couple weeks ago in preparation for a trip I took. I was going to be spending some time in a “non-permissive environment.” It was a location where I was legal to carry my guns, but rules of the event prohibited being armed. I had to carry my gun in a manner that ensured that it was deeply concealed. I planned on carrying a Ruger LCP and/or a Glock 26.
I ran the drill the first time with my Ruger LCP out of a pocket holster. All hits. I only missed the time limit on the first stage at the seven yard line. My fingers slid off the slide as I was racking the little pistol and I went .15 seconds over.
I then ran the drill with my Glock 26 from an inside the waistband holster concealed under an untucked shirt. Hits were about the same, but my times were faster.
This drill doesn’t look very challenging, but I found it to be more than adequate when shot with a small gun or from concealment. It would be a great course of fire to use to better your performance with a snub revolver or a small .380 auto. Give it a try and report your results in the comments below!
