Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.
Share With All the Schools, Please…
I’m exploring my softer side with this post…
But seriously, this is an excellent way to prevent many school shootings. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of work on the part of the teachers so I’m not convinced that it will have a significant buy-in. If you are a teacher or deal with children in any other formal context, think about doing what this teacher does.
Scaled DryfireTarget Kit
A very neat idea…set up a dryfire range in your basement or garage! While you are looking at Ben’s stuff, pick up his dryfire book Champion Shooting. It’s one of the best series of dry fire drills I’ve found.
Helpful Tip for Training with Knives
“Waving” a folding knife is the fastest opening method available. Tamara discusses a “wave” alternative using a cable tie. This method is old school and usually works fairly well, but not as reliably as the wave. I prefer to make a home made “wave” on my knives using a dremel tool. It may not be pretty, but it works even better than the licensed versions. It also makes a great bottle opener!
You don’t need a Spyderco. Any tip up carry folder with an opening hole can be “waved.” I’ve also done Benchmade Griptilians and Ka-Bar TDI folders this way. Check out the picture of my carry knives below and break out your dremel!
Gel Testing the 158 grain LSWCHP
The 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter hollowpoint was THE defensive round of choice for the .38 special for decades. It is still a good performer. I wouldn’t personally be dismayed at the lack of expansion through four layer denim. That’s a hard test for any .38 round to pass when shot through a 2″ barrel. Followup testing on the Remington version and the Federal version.
Small Fixed Blades for EDC
Chris Fry shows some excellent options for carrying fixed blade knives as defensive tools. As all of you who have taken my knife class know, the fixed blade is clearly better for self defense than the folder. Chris teaches some excellent classes through his company MDTS. If you are in the New York area, check him out. If you are looking for the TDI knife or the LDK knife that I designed, Amazon is our largest distributor.
Budget Red Dot Sights
A comprehensive comparison of the sub $200 rifle red dot sights. If you can’t afford an Aimpoint, check out one of these.

Surefire 60 Round Mag Loaded for 22 Months
The keyboard commandos said it couldn’t work, but the SureFire 60 round AR magazine is proving to be extremely reliable. Mine has gone through thousands of rounds without a single malfunction. It’s the mag I keep loaded in my police AR-15.
Stay In Your Lane
Never in our history has such great firearms training been available to the average person. But along with that has come an influx of instructors who are complete idiots. Here’s a field guide to identifying the hucksters.

Ruger Recall
Ruger has announced a recall on some of their American Rimfire rifles. If your rifle is affected, send it back to the factory and get it fixed…you can’t find ammo to shoot it anyway!
