Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.
Gun Science: Active Electronic Ear-pro deep dive
Everything you have ever wanted to know about electronically amplified hearing protection.
The Unexpected Flaw of the Paleo Diet Philosophy
Some additional bits of information to digest before you go “Paleo.”
The Open Wound
A very good article discussing when it is appropriate to close a wound for all you wilderness/survival medicine enthusiasts. This article gives you information about HOW to close the wound using steri-strips, staples, or sutures. It is an excellent summary. Finally, THIS ARTICLE talks about what wounds shouldn’t be closed and how to facilitate healing by secondary intention.
Ottowa Ankle Rules – Are you hurt or injured?
One more austere medicine article. How can you tell (in the field) whether you have a sprained or broken ankle? It’s broken if you have ankle pain, pain in areas A or B, and inability to bear weight.
The LE “Retirement Gun”
It’s tough to beat a Glock 19 combined with a Colt 6920. Add a J-frame to the list and I could certainly be good to go in my retirement years.
Survival Gear Review: Ruger 10/22 Takedown
I think you could make a case for the 10/22 being the “ultimate survival rifle.” I have two of them. One has a red dot and the other has a magnified scope. Both have the Ruger factory 25 round mags and are threaded to take a suppressor. A suppressed 10/22 with a scope can do a lot of damage.
Developing a Pre-Disposition For Effective Violence
“The archaeological and historical record is amply clear that there is NO inherent genetic resistance to stabbing a motherfucker in the face, chopping his head off with sword or axe, or burning his house down around his ass. If you can manage to practice the six aspects of developing a pre-disposition towards effective violence, then dropping the hammer, fist or firearm, will not be an issue when the need arises.”
How Poor Young Black Men Run from the Police
Very interesting data and anecdotes. The article is far more intellectual than you might assume given the title. I liked the stuff about how they identify cops and train to escape. It worries me that while these guys choose to flee when they spot a cop, others may use the same identification skills to go on the attack. Makes me wonder how it affects CCW folks who consciously try to emulate a lot of the same characteristics that the criminals use to ID the cops. I’m currently reading Goffman’s book “On the Run.” An excellent review of the book is HERE.
Six Things You Should Know Before Carrying a Gun
The Gun Safety Blog lists some good advice for those of you who carry. I especially agree with his last point!
6 Healthy Relationship Habits Most People Think Are Toxic
Another outstanding article from Mark Manson. Manson’s book “Models” is a must read for men who aren’t in a relationship that they truly want.
RBT – Realistic Based Training
Mark Slane (my first Krav Maga instructor) provides some intelligent commentary on how to structure reality based training scenarios for students. Instructors who conduct such training should heed his advice. One other thing I have learned over the years that Mark doesn’t do here, is to allow the scenarios to run to their logical natural conclusion. Too many scenarios are artificially stopped when the “lesson” has been taught. Expand each of the scenarios beyond the gunfight. Make the student get to cover, perform an after action scan, and call in the shooting. Make the student treat his own “gunshot wound” with medical supplies. These skills are critical as well and rarely get covered even in good RBT.
The Revolver: Unappreciated Advantages
“While it’s fun to play Walter Mitty and imagine ourselves defeating an entire street gang singlehandedly, the reality is that one-on-one violent crime is still the most common type encountered by legally armed citizens. In that reality, the revolver’s unappreciated advantages make it a viable choice for self-defense.” I just finished Grant Cunningham’s latest book Defensive Revolver Fundamentals. If you enjoyed this article, you would like the book as well.
THE CULT OF THE TAURUS JUDGE
Speaking of revolvers, you’ll want to check out my friend Sherman’s new Revolver Science webpage, particularly this article about the Taurus Judge.
The 5 Worst Places online to get firearms advice
Every time I look at one of these sources of “information”, the only thing I want to do with my gun is shoot myself in the head. Stay away!
Advice to new firearm instructors
Here’s some advice for newly certified police or NRA firearms instructors: Your instructor course was inadequate. It did not prepare you to teach. You need to learn more…lots more…before you will ever become a good instructor. Most of you will get defensive and deny this statement. That’s fine. The smarter among you will heed Kathy’s advice in this article and do the work.
One of the funniest videos I’ve seen in a long while…
Everyone Makes a Mistake, Even Ruger
Important information to know if you have a Ruger SR-762.
Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram kills 200 civilians in horrifying attack
“During the attack, members of the hardline Islamist militant group dressed up like Nigerian soldiers.”
Another instance where Islamic terrorists used police or military uniforms to get close to their target. As I have said before, the tactics they are perfecting in Africa and the Middle East will be used here as well. And we are no where near prepared enough to deal with them. Check out this article and this article for more details about this kind of attack.
