Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.
Steel Plates – An Opinion
Max Velocity provides some information about hard armor rifle plates. His book Contact is a must-read primer on small unit tactics.
Chasing Our Tails?: Polymer Service Pistol Mods
A description of pistol modifications that are useful and those that might make your pistol less reliable.
SR’s handgun caliber choice and why
An excellent primer on handgun “stopping power.”
The Over Exaggerated “C” Clamp Grip…Hype or Not?
I’ve played with this grip quite a bit. While it does slightly improve my shot-to-shot transitions on multiple targets, it isn’t comfortable for my to maintain for long periods of time and horribly exposes the weak side arm when using cover. I don’t use it much. I’d encourage everyone to try it and find what works the best FOR YOU.
How much protein do you REALLY need?
An informative article detailing the science behind protein metabolism. What the science doesn’t cover is individual variation. Some people do better with very high protein levels. Some do not. I tracked my dietary intake every day for a couple of years while in college, varying macronutrient ratios to figure out what works best for me. I found that I don’t seem to get any additional benefit if I eat more than 150 grams of protein a day. That’s about 1.3 grams per kilogram of bodyweight, not the 1-2 grams per POUND of bodyweight that most bodybuilding magazines recommend.

Why Readers, Scientifically, Are The Best People To Fall In Love With
Reading is more important than most people realize. The single best move I have made in my life is to get rid of television in my house so that I can read and write more. I’d encourage all of you to give it a try. Replace television with a book for 30 days. It will change your life.
What skills should we train and practice?
“Some folks spend a lot of time on thinking about how much spare ammunition to carry, how to carry it, and how to reload quickly. I think that time and effort would be better spent on practicing to make a good first shot, which is a skill many people need a lot of practice on.”
Concealed Carry Tips: How to Stop Worrying About “Printing”
Great advice for all of you who carry concealed. I’ll add that darker shirts and shirts with a pattern will make “printing” harder to detect.
Remington’s New Golden Saber 45 Auto 230 Grain BJHP – Ultimate Defense Terminal Test
I get asked about Remington Golden Sabre ammo pretty regularly. I’m not a big fan. The FBI issued the Golden Sabre for awhile and got rid of it after inconsistent performance. Here are some ballistic tests of its latest incarnation. It’s not the worst ammo on the market, but it’s definitely second-tier behind the HST, Ranger, and Gold Dot rounds.
NEW GUN LIGHT
For those of you who still carry revolvers, a pretty neat idea.
In the Real World, Violence is Golden
“So we need not like violence, but we need to acknowledge the role it plays in securing our lives, liberty, property, and way of life. More than that; we need to embrace it, and stand eternally vigilant to carry it out either individually or collectively if (when) the need arises. There will always be someone who cheats, who defects, who simply doesn’t get with the “ideal world” program. If we don’t prepare for that, we are at the mercy of those who do. And on that note, I think that the best way to end this article is the same way it began, with a quote from Violence is Golden: “It’s time to quit worrying and learn to love the battle axe. History teaches us that if we don’t, someone else will.””
